Frequently Asked Questions

  • Club Weightlifting, similar to club volleyball or club soccer, runs during the off-season for high school weightlifting to allow athletes to continue training year round. The reality of high school weightlifting is that the best of the best, those who qualify and compete at the state championships and beyond, all train year round.

Club Weightlifting is a part of USA Weightlifting, the organization that runs the National Championships, and identifies and recruits high performers to compete for Team USA at international competitions such as the World Championships and Olympics.

While high school weightlifting has both the Traditional event (Bench Press + Clean & Jerk) and the Olympic event (Snatch + Clean & Jerk), Club Weightlifting only competes in the Olympic event.

Our focus will be on helping athletes qualify and compete at the National Championships in Colorado Springs, Co. from June 20th-28th, then preparing for the upcoming high school season starting in July.

  • The qualifying process for nationals is much simpler than the process for FHSAA Regionals and States, you simply need to lift the minimum qualifying total for your weight class and age division in a sanctioned USA Weightlifting Meet by May 21st at the latest. This does include the FHSAA Weightlifting State Championships. The list of qualifying totals can always be found on the USAW Website, but I’ve included them here with translations from kilograms to pounds for ease.

In order to compete at both nationals and any qualifying meet, you must have a USA Weightlifting membership which you can sign up for here

Once you have signed up for a USAW membership, you can now sign up for any USA Weightlifting local competition. The first qualifying competition we are attending will be on Saturday, February 21st at Capital City Barbell here in Tallahassee Fl. You can sign up for that here

We will also be announcing additional qualifying events over the next few weeks.

Once your athlete has qualified for Nationals, I recommend signing up as soon as possible as the late registration fees are egregious.

    • Early Registration: $145, closes May 7th

    • Registration: $175, closes May 21st

    • Late Registration: $375, closes June 4th

  • Yes! Athletes can add on additional 1-on-1 sessions for $70/60 min session, or a custom training program for $100/mo. Email info@bigbendsc.com for more details.
