The Man Who Wrote The Book On Weightlifting [Ep. 66: Catalyst Athletics]

Greg Everett (@catalystathletics) has contributed more to the sport of weightlifting with free articles, programs, and videos than anyone else - he's a huge inspiration to me, and having him on the podcast was a dream come true.

In this week's episode of the Last Set Best Set Podcast, Coach Calvin and I ask Greg about...

  • How you can tell if a program, exercise, or approach is working vs. when to call it quits

  • Why you can have a great training cycle and not see the results you wanted at the end

  • The two biggest mistakes weightlifters make that hold back your technique

My biggest takeaway was the last bullet point.

Greg pointed out the same thing I see every day; so many of you do not care how you move the bar until it gets to 85-90%, and then suddenly everyone wants to work on technique now that the lift doesn't feel good.

If you want to actually see technique improvements you need to understand one thing...

You're always practicing something.

Whether you're grabbing the bar and doing some lazy sloppy lifts or doing it with perfect technique, you are rehearsing how you expect to do the lift when it gets heavy.

Make sure you rehearse the lifts the way you want to perform them at max weights.

But there's one thing that Greg says is even more overlooked when it comes to technique...

And that's making sure that all of your supplemental work is done intentionally!

  • If you swing your pulls away with straight arms, I'll bet you have a problem keeping the bar close in the snatch.

  • If you don't forcefully lock your elbows and hold the weight overhead on push presses, I'll bet your lockout sucks.

So one thing I want you to take into your training this week is to be intentional with every exercise.

Find those areas of the lifts you don't normally pay attention to and work on them.

Because how you do anything is how you do everything.
