USA Weightlifting's Next Olympic Champion? [Ep. 64: Caden Cahoy]
Ever wondered how a world champion thinks about their technique?
In today's episode of the Last Set Best Set Podcast, Coach Calvin and I interview 2024 Junior World Champion and 2028 Olympic hopeful, Caden Cahoy!
One of the most interesting takeaways came from our discussion about how he and his coach work on technique.
Yes, even world champions are working on their technique.
When asked whether they try to improve technique by using cues, practice with variations, or addressing strength deficiencies, here's what Caden and Chad (his coach and dad) had to say...
Well really, it's all of the above, right?
I think that's really important to point out - we talk to lifters and coaches of all types, and one thing you'll find is that some people develop a bias towards one aspect or another.
Some coaches focus on strength, and get great results, but have technically inconsistent lifters.
Other coaches focus on technique, and their athletes move well, but don't put up impressive numbers.
The point the Cahoy's make here shows that you can't just solve every problem with just one approach.
You need a program that approaches fixing your technique by...
Including lots of practice in the snatch and clean and jerk
Addressing maximal strength in the squat, pull, and press
Building muscle in key weak points like your legs, back, core, and shoulders
All while getting feedback and coaching on your lifts to make sure the practice is as high of quality as possible.
